President Maithripala Sirisena who is currently in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly is scheduled to engage in few high profile bilateral discussions today.
Accordingly President Sirisena will meet with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma and Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Switzerland’s President Simonetta Sommaruga and the Chairman of the International Red Cross.
During discussions, Indian Premier Narendra Modi said that he supported the quest for justice, but also respected Sri Lanka’s sovereignty.
He added that a way could be found for a consensus between the Sri Lankan Government and the UNHRC.
The Swiss President had also assured of its support to programmes initiated through a new constitution.
The President’s Media Unit stated that President Maithripala Sirisena had emphasized during these discussions that shortcomings of the past will be addressed.

President to meet UN Secretary General today
The 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly commenced yesterday at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Inaugurating the session for 2015, the summit on Sustainable Development was begun with the key note address by the Pope Francis.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, Presidents of the two host countries as well as representatives of civil societies will address the Summit on Sustainable Development – 2015 today.
The Summit on Sustainable Development – 2015 which commenced parallel to the 70th Session of the UNGA will be held till September 28th.
President Maithripala Sirisena will address this summit.
