New Electoral system before end of this year; says Prime Minister
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said the new electoral system is expected to be introduced before the end of this year.
Addressing the 60th anniversary of the Department of Elections held this morning at the BMICH, the Prime Minister said the attention has been drawn to increase the women representation in provincial councils and local government institutions.
Premier Wickremesinghe was the chief guest at this ceremony.
Former presidents Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Mahinda Rajapaksa were also present.
Opposition Leader R. Sampandan, former Prime Minister D.M. Jayarathna and several political representatives were also present at the event.
Addressing the gathering, Opposition Leader Sampandan said that the Election Department should act independently in order to safeguard democracy in the country.
