President Maithreepala Sirisena returned to the island this afternoon after participating in the 70th UN General Assembly held in New York.
The president was welcomed on his arrival by several ministers including Nimal Siripala de Silva, S.B. Dissanayake and Duminda Dissanayake.
In addition, a large crowd of well-wishers gathered at the airport to receive the president.
The Maha Sangha chanted seth pirith followed by other religious rites performed by several leaders of different denominations to offer blessings on the President.
On the sidelines of the 70th UN General Assembly, President Sirisena participated in the UN Sustainable Development Summit as well.
During his tour of America, President Sirisena met several world leaders including U.S. President Barack Obama, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UN Secretary General Ban Ke-moon and, had bilateral discussions with them.
The President also visited the New York Buddhist temple on Binara Poya Day and met Sri Lankans living in United States.
Meanwhile President Sirisena had met a group of U.S. investors before he left New York yesterday.
