The giant wild elephant known among villagers as ‘Kabaraya’, who was roaming the hamlets of Navaththegama damaging property and worrying the villagers was rescued yesterday(4th) by Wildlife officers and the police with the use of a backhoe, when it was found in a cultivation well in Kuruketiyawa area, and was afterwards released to the forest.

The villagers had informed Wildlife Security Officer of Navaththegama H A Chandrasiri yesterday that the elephant had fallen into a large cultivation well beside a paddy field in Kurukeitiyawa, Navaththegama and the pachyderm was hauled out by a backhoe with the help of about 15 police officers.

Wildlife officers stated that this elephant is above 8ft in height and above 25 years in age.
