Lukewarm attitude by the Environmental Authority regarding the water pollution incident of Kalani River
The Human Rights Commission states that the Central Environment Authority has maintained a lukewarm attitude in taking action against the oil contamination incident of the Kelani River.
A petition was filed at the Human Rights Commission by the Center to Study Environment and Nature, jointly with the People’s Movement for free rights of water.
In their petition, the two organizations had made charges against the Central Environmental Authority and the Water Supply and Drainage Board.
Meanwhile, the Central Environmental Authority has issued an Environment Protection License to the controversial factory which is blamed for leaking furnace oil to the Kelani River.
The Chairman of the Central Environmental Authority Professor Lal Dharmasiri explained why a license was issued again to the liable factory.
