All the protesters now engaged in the hunger strike are either suspects of LTTE activities or convicted for crimes committed by the LTTE.

148 prisoners from Colombo Magazine prison, Anuradhapura and Batticaloa have joined the hunger strike.

The Commissioner General of Prison stated that the letter by the prisoners would be submitted to the President through proper channels.

Meanwhile Northern Provincial Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran also submitted a letter to the President with regard to the same matter.

Wigneswaran stated in his letter that swift actions should be taken to release Tamil detainees, who have been kept in prison for long years.

However, Minister of Law and Order and Prison Reforms Thilak Marapana said that there are no political prisoners in Sri Lanka.
