Update: Baton charge on protestors who blocked Colombo – Katharagama road
The police used baton charge to disperse a group of protesters who blocked Colombo Kataragama road at Bandagiriya in Hambantota today.
The protesters demanded clean drinking water for the residents in the area.
Three police officers and three protesters were injured during the clash between the two groups.
Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said that 12 persons have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Traffic on the Colombo Kataragama main road was obstructed at Palle-malala due to the protest staged by residents of Bandagiriya this morning.
Officers from seven nearby police stations including Lunugamvehera, Kataragama , Ambalantota and the riot police unit of Tangalle police were called for assistance.
Meanwhile Police Media spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said protestors hurled stones at a CTB bus when it was asked to be driven forward in order to clear the block.
Police was compelled to use minimum force to disperse the angry crowd.
The Hambantota Headquarters Inspector is also among the injured police officers during the clash.

Another Rathupaswala at Bandagiriya?
A group of people residing at Bandagiriya, Hambanthota are engaged in a protest at Pallemalala junction in the Tissa- Hambanthota main road, requesting clean drinking water. Transport along the Tissa- Hambanthota main road is disrupted due to this reason. The people in Bandagiriya fulfill their drinking water needs from the tank of Bandagiriya. The protestors said that the water in the tank has been polluted.
