Stop the taking over of tame elephants to wildlife custody

The National Union for Protecting Tame Elephants submitted a memorandum to the Wildlife Department requesting the authorities to terminate the practice of taking over tame elephants who are under the care of temples and elephant owners. Chairperson Rev Magalkande Sudattha Thero says that authorities need to take action to register all the tame elephants in the country. He also staged a protest in front of the Department of Wildlife with a group of monks.

Expressing his ideas regarding the issue, Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife Gamini Jayawickrama who was on a tour of the Elephant Orphanage of Pinnawala yesterday said that he will inspect into the protest
