Secretary of the Defense Ministry Karunasena Hettiarachchi says that the Avante Garde ship which arrived at the Galle Port concealing true facts will be handed over to the Galle Police today for further investigations. The ship is under the custody of the Navy at the moment. The report produced by the Navy is currently being assessed by the committee appointed by the Defense Ministry.
The vessel with a Sri Lankan flag hoisted which was sailing close to the Galle harbor on 6th October was inspected by the navy on suspicion. Earlier it was informed that the captain of the ship was a Sri Lankan later on it was revealed that he was a Ukrainian national. Further it was revealed the vessel had reached to deliver weapons to Rakna Lanka Pvt ltd.
The navy conducted a thorough search of the Avant Garde vessel since the information provided was in discrepancy. And defense ministry has appointed a one man independent commission to assess the report by the navy on the inspection of the vessel. A statement was issued by a senior navy official to Hiru news that Action to be taken under civil legislation and inspection to be conducted by the police.
