The notices issued on 13 respondents today following two petitions which have challenged the criterion that is ushered to measure distance from a household to the nearest school in admitting children to Year-1.

This method is used to determine the distance from the child’s household to the school which he or she is expected to be admitted to.

The petitions were filed with the Supreme Court by two parents who failed to admit their children to Year -1 of Matara Rahula Vidyalaya in 2015.

The petitioners stated that their children are qualified to be admitted to Matara Rahula Vidyalaya under the close residence system but they were denied the opportunity.
