A tense situation erupted in parliament today with regard to the incorrect use of minister Ravi Karunanayake’s name by MP Bandula Gunawardana during a debate yesterday.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya was compelled to adjourn parliament session for five minutes due to the pandemonium.
When MP Bandula Gunawardana misquoted minister Karunanayake’s name, leader of the house and Minister Lakshman Kiriella intervened and stated that such a misquoting is an insult to minister Karunanayake.
Minister Karunanayake was absent in the chambers at the time MP Gunawardana raised this issue.
He was firm in his accuracy and said further that he was ready to resign from parliament if his is proved wrong.
Having returned to parliament chambers later, MP Gunawardana admitted that he was confused the facts in presenting minister Karunanayake’s name.
He said although he stated minister Karunanayake’s name as Karunanayake Ravindra Sandesh Ganeshan M, according to Hansard, Ganeshan M was referred to MP Mano Ganeshan.
He said later that he apologized to minister Ravi Karunanayake for misquoting his name.
However, when parliament met today, minister Ravi Karunanayake raised his objections against the misquoting of his name by MP Bandula Gunawardana.
The Minister also told MP Gunawardana to resign from parliament as he challenged yesterday.
