Public Condemns Police assault on HNDA Students
The 39 HNDA students who were arrested during the protest in front of the Higher Education Ministry were released on bail when they were produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate a short while ago.
Police fired tear gas, water canons and baton charged the crowd when students of Higher National Diploma of Accountancy attempted to forcefully enter the University Grants Commission last afternoon.
Addressing the media after the incident, police media spokesman said that police used only minimum force during the protest.
However addressing a media conference after the incident, convener of the Inter University Students Federation Lahiru Weerasekera criticized the police action.
At the same time, convener of the HNDA collective Dhammika Ruwan Kumara said police brutally assaulted the student while they were ready to protest peacefully.
Former president of the University Teachers Association Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri also expressed his views about the police assault on student yesterday.
