The Federal Bureau of Investigation said Saturday it had found no evidence an explosive device had caused a blast aboard a boat carrying the president of the Maldives—a case in which the country’s vice president has been detained.

The statement raises new questions about a Sept. 28 explosion that has roiled the tiny Indian Ocean nation. President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom told reporters his vice president, Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Ghafoor, was taken into custody a week ago “for the security of the country.’’

The FBI had been asked to assist in the investigation of the boat blast, which injured the president’s wife and two other people. The president wasn't harmed.
