The Higher Education Ministry has submitted a Cabinet paper seeking approval to empower the previous Circular which had granted degree level to the Higher National Diploma in Accountancy.

Ministry Secretary D.C. Dissanayake told our news team the attention of the Cabinet would be drawn to this matter during the next Cabinet meeting.

The Collective of HNDA students staged a protest in front of the Higher Education Ministry last week demanding the authorities to upgrade the HNDA to the Commerce degree level.

Later Police fired tear gas, water cannon and baton charged the crowd and, nine students were hospitalized after they received injuries due to the police attack.

Meanwhile police received two Court orders to prevent the protest march organized by the Inter University Students Federation and several other students’ organizations today.

Conversely, IUSF Convener Lahiru Weerasekara speaking to the Hiru News said that they would not be discouraged by the enjoining orders and would try not to disrupt the public during their protest.

University students from across the island and HNDA students are to participate in the protest campaign, the IUSF emphasized.
