Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) Central Committee member Kumar Gunaratnam was remanded till November 18by the Kegalle magistrate yesterday.

He was arrested earlier in the day by the Kegalle Police on alleged immigration and Emigration law violation.

Police wanted a court order to have Gunaratnam deported immediately.

The Frontline Socialist Party politburo member Kumar Gunaratnam, who had been overstaying in the country, was arrested in his mother’s house at Anguruwella in Ruwanwella yesterday morning.

Gunaratnam, an Australian citizen, visited Sri Lanka on tourist visa but did not leave the country on or before his visa expired on January 31st.

Later the Immigration and Emigration Controller informed the police to arrest Gunaratnam for overstaying in the country.

However, the Frontline Socialist Party filed a fundamental rights petition on behalf of Gunaratnam but the petition was dismissed by the Supreme Court.

Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said the suspect would be handed over to Immigration Department soon.

He was previously arrested in 2012 and deported to Australia as he had travelled on a passport carrying another name.
