November 12th has been declared a Day of Mourning for Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera who passed away in Singapore this morning.

At a meeting held this morning at the Kotte Naga Viharaya it was decided to hold the funeral on November 12 at 3 p.m. at the parliament grounds with full state honors.   

The remains will be brought to Sri Lanka at 9.10 pm today on a special Sri Lankan air lines flight.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasingha also participated in the meeting at the Kotte Naga Viharaya.

The remains of Venerable Sobitha Thero was brought to the Singapore airport after performing religious rights at the Sri lankan high commission.

Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayaka also participated.

Justice and Buddhist Affairs Minister Wijedasa Rajapaksa stated that the remains of the thero will be taken to the Kotte Sri Naga Viharaya in a special motorcade.

Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha thero was born on the 29th of May 1942 in Maduluwewa in Padukka, Homagama.

He entered monkhood in May 9th, 1955.

Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha thero rendered a yeoman service to create good governance through the People's Movement for a Free and Just Society.

 

Sobitha thero proposed to select a common candidate to defeat the previous government.

Meanwhile, US Ambassador Athul Keshap on behalf of United States extended condolences to the people and Government of Sri Lanka on the demise of the Venerable Madhuluwawe Sobitha Thero. 

He stated that the late Thero was respected for his efforts to nurture and protect democracy, promote respect for people of all faiths, and improve the lives of all Sri Lankans.

Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero has passed away!

Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhitha Thero has passed away at a hospital in Singapore.
 
The 73-year-old Sobhitha Thera was a chief monk who provided leadership and assured social justice in Sri Lanka.
 
The late Thera engaged in a working programme to ensure coexistence between nations.
