A Hartal was observed in the North and the Eastern provinces demanding an amnesty for the LTTE detainees.

The Hartal was organized by the TNA and several other civil organizations.

Our provincial correspondents stated that the daily rountinea were disrupted as shops were closed and government institutions including schools did not function in the districts of Jaffna, Mannar, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu today.

They reported that the hartal was observed in the areas predominantly occupied by the tamil population in Vavniya and Batticaloa districts.

Meanwhile the Justice ministry stated in a communiqué that the release of LTTE suspects on bail does not mean that they are acquitted from all charges.

The ministry stated that steps would be taken to release 60 LTTE suspects on bail conditions.

The ministry said that 140 suspects detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act were released on November 22, 2010 when Mohan Peries functioned as the Attorney General.
