Update: 135 thousand people affected by inclement weather

135 thousand 338 persons have been affected due to the inclement weather in 11 districts including Jaffna.

The Disaster Management Center stated in a communiqué this morning that 15 thousand 036 persons  have been sheltered in safe makeshift camps.

Meanwhile The depression in the Bay of Bengal has weakened into a low pressure area and is moving away from Sri Lanka.

It is likely to enter Indian land mass through North Thamilnadu coast by this evening or tonight.

Strong winds over the country and surrounding sea areas are highly likely.

Prevailing showery weather over the island is expected to reduce to some extent later today.

Showers or thundershowers will develop elsewhere particularly after 02.00p.m.

Duty Meteorologist Malith Fernando stated that heavy falls, around 100 mili meters, are also likely in certain areas.

Heavy Rains Flood North, Schools Colleges Closed Traffic Disrupted

The depression in the Bay of Bengal has weakened into a low pressure area and is moving away from Sri Lanka.

It is likely to enter Indian land mass through North Thamil Nadu coast by this evening or tonight.

Under the influence of the system, showery weather and cloudy skies is expected to continue in the northern parts and south-western coastal areas of the country today.

Possibility for strong winds over the country and surrounding sea areas is still high.

Prevailing showery weather over the island is expected to be reduced to some extent from today.

Showers or thundershowers will develop elsewhere particularly after 02.00p.m.

Duty Meteorologist Malith Fernando stated that heavy falls about 100 mili meters are also likely at some places.

The Disaster Management centre states that Puthlam, Colombo, Jaffna, Mulathi, Kilinochchi, and Baticalo districts are affected due to adverse weather.

Northern Province Education Secretary E . Ravindran stated that all the schools in the Northern province will be closed today due to inclement weather.

Deputy Director of the DMC Pradeep Kodipillai stated that 38 thousand have been affected.
