Many relief from the budget; Prices of 11 essential goods including Gas, Kerosene and Local Milk Powder reduced


The budget 2016 presented to Parliament yesterday by Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake included many important line items.

The tax which is charged on transferring lands to foreigners will be removed completely, and the super tax would also be removed. 

The Vehicle Emission Test chargers has also been increased up to 5000 Rupees.

Several new proposals have been made to encourage the payment of revenue tax.

The prices of 11 essential goods have been reduced while the Special Goods Tax on Potatoes and Big Onions has been reduced by 25 Rupees.

The price of a domestic LPG gas cylinder has been reduced by 150 rupees, while the price of a litre of kerosene has been reduced by 10 rupees.

The budget also proposed to give a certified price of 50 rupees for a kilogram of Keeri Samba, 48 rupees for Samba and 38 rupees for a kilogram of Nadu.

However, a fertilizer subsidy of 25 thousand rupees would be introduced for small scale farmers and keeping it under a ceiling of one hectare per farmer.

The import duty on cranes and concrete mixtures will also be removed and a 10 thousand rupees allowance has been proposed to be paid for the trainees in the construction industry.

At the same time, 1500 million rupees would be granted to set up village development clusters at every Grama Seva division. 

The import tax on printed books and magazines has been completely removed and university students will be granted loans to buy laptop computers. 

It was also proposed to increase the number of Police stations from 428 to 600.

The Gaming tax has been increased up to 400 Million Rupees and the one day passport service fee has been increased from 7,500 Rupees to 10,000 Rupees.

A new proposal was included that every vehicle entering the city needs to carry a minimum of 4 passengers and failing which a tax will have to be paid while parking facilities is to be provided by the government in several locations.

Vehicle permits issued for Parliamentarians and State Officials cancelled


The budget 2016 presented to Parliament yesterday by Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake included many important line items.

A speciality was that the Tax Free permits issued for Parliamentarians and Government Officials has been cancelled.
