Rugby captain died after being run over by Police vehicle

Former Kurunegala Maliyadeva College rugby captain Indika Daluwatte died after being run over by a Police vehicle, investigations disclosed.

Daluwatte died following a motor accident last Friday (20) afternoon. He was 31 years at the time of his death.

Daluwatte had been riding a motorcycle on the Kurunegala - Puttalam road when a driver of a van parked near Saragama Lake had suddenly opened the driver's side door, which struck Daluwatte throwing him into the middle of the road. The Police vehicle coming from behind had run over the rugby player.

The Police vehicle and the van are in Police custody.

Daluwatte who captained the Maliyadeva First XI team in 2003, also excelled in athletics and was a coloursman who excelled as number-eight for the school.

He also represented the Kurunegala Rugby Football Club.

Funeral takes place at the General Cemetery, Kurunegala today.
