An individual was taken into police custody with a golden Buddha statue which has been excavated from an ancient stupa in Maha Oya- Akuloba police division on Wednesday (9).

The Buddha statue weighs 47 kg 900 g, Police Media sources stated.

The suspect was produced in Dehiattakandiya Magistrate's Court yesterday (10).

Mahaoya police seized a stolen golden Buddha statue few days ago at Thepalpola, Thekkawatee area. Police are to display in front of the Buddha shrine in the Mahaoya police station on the 10th the golden Buddha statues and other religious items which were seized on two occasions.

Mahahoya police station is frequented by a large crowd to pay homage to the golden Buddha statues.
