A high ranking official of the United States visiting Sri Lanka announced the first ever U.S.-Sri Lanka Partnership Dialogue to discuss all aspects of the relationship between the two countries and ways to strengthen the relations.

Under Secretary of State, Ambassador Thomas Shannon speaking to media after meeting with Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera announced that the Dialogue will take place in February 2016 in Washington, DC.

Ambassador Shannon said the annual meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss all aspects of the relationship and ways in which the United States may be able to engage directly with the people of Sri Lanka and the Government.

The U.S. official said he is pleased to be in Sri Lanka for his first visit during "this time of progress and opportunity."

Pointing out that both countries benefited from trade and business but also from cultural exchanges and personal ties, the Ambassador noted Sri Lanka's contributions to the development of a regional consciousness - "one that promotes the values of democratic governance and respect for human rights, freedom of navigation, sustainable development, and environmental stewardship."
