Mariano Rajoy, Spain’s prime minister, was punched in the face Wednesday while on the campaign trail ahead of Sunday’s general election.

The 60-year-old was in the town of Pontevedra in Galicia, northwestern Spain, where he grew up, when he was punched in the side of the head. The assault was caught by TV cameras. The assailant was a 17-year-old, local police said, and was arrested at the scene.

The attacker was stood next to the prime minister when he struck, catching Rajoy by surprise. Spanish TV showed Rajoy falling but he was stopped from hitting the ground by people around him.

A spokesman for Rajoy’s Popular Party said the prime minister was unhurt and Rajoy himself said he was “fine, great, no problem.” But he was later seen with a large red mark on the side of his face and without his glasses, which were knocked off in the attack.

Spain goes to the polls on Sunday, with the PP expected to come out on top but with a greatly reduced majority.
