The 3rd reading of budget 2016 was passed in parliament, with a majority of 109 votes short while ago.

160 voted in favour of the budget, 51 voted against the budget while 13 MP’s were absent.

Meanwhile, The second reading of the budget 2016 was passed in parliament on the 2nd of December with a  majority of 107 votes.

159 MPs voted for the budget while 52 voted against.  13 MPs were absent.

SLFP and TNA MPs joined their UNP counterparts. However JVP and SLFP Joint Opposition members voted against the budget.

During the budget speech Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayaka stated that due to new amendments to the budget government expenditure has increased by 35 thousand 500 million rupees.

He further stated that as the first stage 2500 rupees will be added to the basic salary of public sector employees from next year.

Final voting on the budget today

The voting on the 3rd reading of the budget 2016 will be held in Parliament this afternoon.

This is following the conclusion of the budget committee stage debate.

The committee level debate on the heads of eight ministries including Plantations, Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure and Internal Affairs was taken up yesterday.
