The 3rd reading of budget 2016 was passed in parliament, with a majority of 109 votes yesterday.
160 voted in favour of the budget, 51 voted against it while 13 MP’s were absent.
Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake presented the budget to the parliament on the 20th of November.
The second reading of the budget 2016 was passed in parliament on the 2nd of December with a majority of 107 votes.
The absent MP’s were Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Wimal Weerawansa, Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Thenuka Vidanagamage, Janaka Bandara, Manusha Nanayakkara, Siripala Gamlath, Premalal Jayasekera, Geetha Kumarasinghe, Selvam Adekkalanaadan, Shiva Shakthi Anandan, Ali Sabir Mowlana, and M.K.D.S Gunawardena respectively.
However the MP’s absent during the 2nd reading of the budget, UNP MP Buddhika Pathirana and Ven. Rathana of the Hela Urumaya were present for the voting yesterday.
SLFP and TNA MPs joined their UNP counterparts in voting for the budget.
However JVP and SLFP Joint Opposition members voted against it.
Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake making the reply speech on the budget noted that expenditure of the state increased by 35.5 Billion Rupees due to the recent amendments made.
He noted that he would cater to the added expenditure by cutting down expenses of other ventures.
The finance minister added further that the state resources will be allocated accordingly in order to boost investments.
He also provided additional details with regard to the amendments made and added that the increment of salary’s of the state employees will be implemented in the month of January.
