Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, has requested Catholic priests to not display Christmas trees within the church premises.
Sending a special request letter, directed to the priests he noted that the Christmas tree is not a symbol of worship for the Catholics.
However, it was noted that the Christmas tree could be displayed outside the church premises if necessary.
According to the Catholics the Christmas tree is considered a symbol of the Christmas season in Europe.
Also the Catholic Council says that Saint Nicholos, commonly known as Santa Clause should not be used for commercial purposes.
The Cardinal has stated that using Santa Clause for commercial purposes would cause disrepute to the service rendered by him to the poor back in the day.
