The joint search operation launched by Police and Navy after a mother and a son said to have jumped to Nilvala River from Mahanama Bridge in Matara has been halted.

Police said the operation which continued for nearly five hours was halted in the afternoon.

It is believed that the two have jumped to the river last night and a hand bag and a pair of slippers have been found lying on the bridge.

Police further stated that the mother was a 35 years old school teacher while her son was 10 and they were residents of Ratmalana.

A family dispute believed to be the motive behind the suicide.

Police have recorded a statement from several relatives of the victims at the Matara Police station this afternoon.
