Foreign fishing vessels to be allowed to fish under Sri Lankan flag

The Government has decided to give permission to large foreign fishing vessels to engage in fishing under the Sri Lankan flag in international waters owned by Sri Lanka.

Director General of the Fisheries Department M C L Fernando stated that permission will be granted under strict conditions.

He further stated that Cabinet approval has already been granted while parliamentary approval will also be sought.

He further stated that this would not be a threat to local fishermen and rather a mode of assistance.

Meanwhile, the ban on fisheries products imposed by the EU is also likely to be removed by March.
