A tense situation between the police and The Sinhale National Movement arose yesterday during the pledging ceremony under the theme “Deyata Pana Demi Sinhale” at the Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy.
The procession which commenced at the independence square Colombo displayed Buddhist flags along with the national flag omitting the representation of the minorities which had antagonized them in the past.
The procession arrived in Mawanella around 2pm where they received a warning from the police to not cause inconvenience to the public by lighting up crackers which resulted in a heated exchange of words.
Subsequently the police announced to the participants of the procession that admission into the temple of the tooth relic displaying a flag which is not the national flag would not be permitted.
Following the chanting of pirith taking of the pledge commenced.
