The Government of Sri Lanka destroyed African elephant tusks worth Rs. 368 million at Galle Face Green, which were confiscated by Sri Lanka Customs in 2012.

A haul of 359 pieces of blood ivory, equaling 1.5 tons worth more than 387 million rupees forfeited by Sri Lanka Customs in 2012, is being destroyed now under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and the Premier Ranil Wickramasinghe at the Galle Face Green.

The Secretary General of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), John E. Scanlon arrived at Sri Lanka yesterday to observe the demolition of blood ivory, the first time in South Asian region.
