At the special executive meeting of the SLFP held today with the patronage of party chairman, President Maithripala Sirisena, Party General Secretary Minster Duminda Dissanayake said that the forthcoming local government election and the new constitutional changes were discussed during the meeting.
He further said that all participants came to a formal agreement to work together for the party’s victory.
SLFP ministers who support President Sirisena and a number of SLFP MP’s who have allegiance with former president Mahinda Rajapaksa participated in the meeting.
Meanwhile, The SLFP MPs in the Joint Opposition have stated that it is not necessary to form a new political party.
Addressing a media conference held in Colombo today, MPs Roshan Ranasinghe and Ramesh Pathirana said they anticipate the forthcoming local government polls will be led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa under the leadership of president Maithripala Sirisena.
Despite the statements made, other alliances of the Joint Opposition, stated recently that they will contest the forthcoming local government polls as a separate party.
