Malaysian police discovered the bodies of 13 people believed to be Indonesian at a beach in the southern state of Johor, Malaysian state media reported on Tuesday.

According to the state news agency, the bodies were found at an eastern coastal area named Bandar Penawar near Kota Tinggi.

Malaysian authorities launched a search for a capsized boat carrying up to 35 people after 13 bodies washed up on the beach.

Authorities in Jakarta said that the boat capsized after being hit by strong waves.

"ID cards from Indonesia were found," on the 13 dead bodies, Indonesian Foreign Office stated.

According to the state media, four of the 13 victims were men, nine were women, foreign media reports.
