The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court yesterday that few disputable clauses in the draft bill for the formulation of a Theravada Bhikku Code presented to Parliament are being removed.

Deputy Solicitor General Sobhitha Rajakaruna informed Courts that the Minister of Buddha Sasana was not making decisions on his own.

He stated that decisions pertaining to the Sangha will be made only upon the blessings of the Maha Nayaka Thera’s of the 3 Nikaaya’s.

2 petitions filed by the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya and another Attorney were taken up before a 3 member bench comprising Priyasaad Depp, Eva Wanasundara and Sisira De Abrew.

The petitioners had said that certain clauses in the proposed draft bill would have a harmful effect on the Saasana and also pointed out that empowering a Minister to make decisions regarding Buddhist Monks was questionable.

The Pivithuru Hela Urumaya also objected to the fact that a Theravada Monk could be produced before a Magistrate Court.

However, the Deputy Solicitor General appearing on behalf of the Attorney General stated that already clauses 2, 4 and 5 have been removed from the draft.
