President Maithripala Sirisena in his Independence Day message has called upon the nation for a pledge to consolidate on the peace and freedom that has been achieved. He urged that the people of sri lanka help to build the future of the motherland and the nation.

He said “ On this day, as we celebrate the 68th anniversary of our Independence, we are proud of the progress made towards safeguarding the freedom, sovereignty, territorial integrity of the Nation and strengthening national reconciliation and economic and political rights of all our citizens”.

The president also stated, "This occasion is of special significance because we commemorate the dawn of freedom at a time coinciding with the taking of clear and resolute steps to firmly establish democracy and good governance, the Rule of Law, and a truly meaningful parliamentary system; to establish a long lasting and stable structure of good governance in keeping with the mandate given by the people one year ago.”

Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe said in a communiqué issued  that although Sri Lanka has been restored as a country that abides by the democratic principles with last year's election of new government, the country faces a formidable task of ensuring lasting peace and co-existence for all citizens while building on the concept of social economic development for the country.

England Queen, Elizabeth the 2nd has sent a congratulatory message to the President on the occasion of the country's 68th National Independence Day.

Indian President Pranab Mukherjee also extended his greetings and felicitations to the government and people of Sri Lanka.

In a message to President Maithripala Sirisena, President Mukherjee said, Quote -“On behalf of the Government, it gives me immense pleasure to extend warm felicitations and best wishes to Your Excellency and to the people of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on the occasion of the 68th Anniversary of your Independence”.
