Minister of Internal Affairs S.B. Nawinna revealed that the Government of Sri Lanka plans to grant dual citizenship to nearly 10,000 emigrants.

The Minister made this remark at a ceremony held in the BMICH to present dual citizenship to 1,000 Sri Lankans expatriates, including 3130 Sri Lankans living in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France and Italy.

According to Government sources, more than 40,000 Sri Lankans hold dual citizenship by now.

The ex-Government suspended granting dual citizenship- a service initiated since 1987, in February 2011 and the service resumed on 30th April 2015 after the new government came into the power.
