The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein who is on a 4-day official visit in Sri Lanka, met External Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera yesterday afternoon (06th).
The meeting was held at the External Affairs Minister’s official residence.
Meanwhile, the High Commissioner met UN representative for Sri Lanka Una McCauley at the Colombo headquarters of the UN this evening.
Marking the 2nd day of his tour, the UN High commissioner is due to engage in a tour in Jaffna and Trincomalee today (07th).
He is also due to meet several diplomatic officials including the Chief Ministers of the Northern and Eastern provinces as well as the governors.
In addition, the UN High Commisioner is also expected to hold bilateral talks with the Sri Lankan President and Prime Minister.
A delegation of 6 including the UN High commissioner arrived Katunayake Airport this morning from Dubai.
The delegation was welcomed by the External Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera and a group of representatives at the airport.
The UN High Commissioner’s office in Geneva announced that during his visit, the UN High Commissioner also intends to discuss concerning the challenges and opportunities faced by the country in its attempts to protect human rights and the rule of law.
In addition, the UN High Commissioner will also enquire regarding the progress of implementing the resolutions on Sri Lanka that were passed in Geneva’s UN Human Rights Council on the 1st of October 2015.
