The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein who is on a 4-day official visit in Sri Lanka, is due to engage in a tour in Jaffna and Trincomalee.
Today is the second day of his tour.
The High Commissioner met UN representative for Sri Lanka Una McCauley at the Colombo headquarters of the UN this yesterday.
He is also due to meet several diplomatic officials including the Chief Ministers of the Northern and Eastern provinces as well as the governors.
In addition, the UN High Commisioner is also expected to hold bilateral talks with the Sri Lankan President and Prime Minister.
The UN High Commissioner’s office in Geneva announced that during his visit, the UN High Commissioner also intends to discuss concerning the challenges and opportunities faced by the country in its attempts to protect human rights and the rule of law.
In addition, the UN High Commissioner will also enquire regarding the progress of implementing the resolutions on Sri Lanka that were passed in Geneva’s UN Human Rights Council on the 1st of October 2015.
Meanwhile, the National Freedom Front staged a protest march yesterday, to protest against the visit of the UNHRC Commissioner to Sri Lanka.
The protest was staged in front of the Lipton roundabout and proceeded as a march towards Tummulla junction where the UN Compound of Sri Lanka is located.
