A group of officials attached to the Urban Development Authority has started a census this afternoon on the houses which were labelled as unauthorized structures and demolished subsequently, at Thotalanga.

Senior Advisor of the UDA Maithri Gunarathne said the aim of the census is to rectify the problems that emerged when new housing was given to residents of Kajeema Mawatha.

The protest was launched by the residents after the UDA continued to demolish 200 unauthorized structures until this morning.

The Colombo Negombo Road was closed for Traffic last night as well as this morning due to the protest.

Traffic congestion was reported on several of the main roads including the Colombo Negombo Road, Baseline Road and the Peliyagoda Roundabout, due to the protest this morning, inconveniencing commuters.

Later, the police mediated in a discussion between the Minister of Megapolis and Western Development Patali Champika Ranawaka and 10 representatives of the protestors.

Meanwhile, Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka told the media that the government has provided housing to the needy in new housing schemes and, only 35 families will housed in temporary shelters.
