A little-known Indian company is launching a smartphone believed to be the cheapest in the world, targeting a market already dominated by low-cost handsets.

Indian media report it could be as low as 251 rupees ($5). The BBC reports the phone has 8GB of storage and cameras on the front and back.

The phone is manufactured by Ringing Bells, a new Indian company set up to provide affordable smartphones. It’s already been selling a 4G-ready handset for 3,000 rupees—about £30

Ringing Bells was set up in September 2015 and began selling mobile phones via its website a few weeks ago under its Bell brand.

Ringing Bells currently imports parts from overseas and assembles them in India but plans to make its phones domestically within a year.

Cheap smartphones, many of them Chinese-made, are readily available in the Indian market but domestic competitors are making inroads.

India is the world's second-largest mobile market and notched up its billionth mobile phone subscriber in October, according to the country's telecoms regulator.

The device features the kind of technical specification that many people would be quite content with: A 4-inch screen, 1.3 GHz quadcore processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, 3.2-megapixel rear camera, 0.3-megapixel front camera and a 1,450mAh battery. On top of all that, it runs Android 5.1.
