The first special prayer service of St.Anthony’s Church Feast in Kachchatheevu island commences today evening.
The Church’s Feast will commence tomorrow followed by today’s special service.
Indian High Commission has informed Sri Lankan Government that over 3800 pilgrims are approaching the Kachchatheev Island Feast in over 100 boats while over 3500 pilgrims from Sri Lanka are also attending the annual Feast.
Sri Lanka Navy told Hiru News that they will provide all facilities and security for the visiting pilgrims.
The St. Anthony’s Catholic shrine has been declared a sacred area by the government of Sri Lanka.Traditionally, the island was frequented by Indian fishermen, who used it as a staging post to dry their nets and their catch. Pilgrims from both countries visit the island every year at the end of February or beginning of March for a week-long festival.
