A tense situation occurred between the Ministry of Education and Provincial Ministers of Education, following a special meeting held in Kandy between the Provincial Ministers and Chief Ministers today.
Accordingly, the Provincial Education Ministers and the Chief Ministers have decided not to let their officials from provincial ministries participate in the meetings convened by the Ministry of Education.
Provincial education ministers representing six provinces participated in the meeting held in Kandy, including representatives from Northern, Western and Sabaragamu provinces.
Chief Minister of Central Province Sarath Ekanayake voiced his strong objection against the manner in which certain ministries act, by exceeding the powers of the relevant provincial councils.
When our news team enquired from the Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam with regard to the matter, he had this to say.
Elaborating further, the minister stated that there were several issues in the Northern Province including calling for contracts and appointing teachers.
