A powerful cyclone has hit Fiji yesterday evening killing one and causing severe damages to the Pacific nation.
The Winston Cyclone is said to be the most powerful storm in the Southern Hemisphere. According to Joint Warning Center the cyclone’s winds reached over 200 mph and torrential rain up to 40ft.
Foreign media reported that entire villages were flattened, while 750 evacuation centers, nationwide, were put in place for the affected. Over 1000 people are currently taking refuge in these centers.
Meanwhile, a resident sharing this devastating experience with media said, “Winston was a monster of a cyclone. I have not experienced anything like this before in my life, nor has my 60-year-old father.”
Before Fiji was hit by the strong cyclone, its Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama has warned the public stating that they are facing an ordeal of the most grievous kind.
