Ban on Laila and Surukku fishing nets will be in place from today.

This step was taken by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Development to stop damages and disturbances caused to ocean resources. Meanwhile, the ministry have introduced a new fishing system.

Accordingly, a fishing net should be 225m long and has a height of 25m, and the opening of the net should be over two and a quarter inches, the ministry stated adding that bottom fishing is prohibited.

The newly introduced fishing nets should be used seven miles from the coasts of Colombo, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambanthota and East. Also 10 miles away from sea coasts in other areas.

The Navy, Coast Guard Corps and fisheries inspectors will be deployed to implement the new fishing laws.
