Several trade unions including the Customs Officers Association have withdrawn from duty and are now engaged in a protest of a proposal to set up a separate unit to inspect the efficiency of customs revenue.
The Customs Officers Association stated that the Finance Ministry has been preparing a Cabinet paper seeking permission to establish this monitoring hand of the Customs.
The Trade Unions’ view is that this particular unit will be vested with powers to monitor revenue earned by the Customs Department, the Inland Revenue Department, the Excise Department and Department of Valuation.
The protesting trade unions demand that the proposed Cabinet paper is withdrawn and the new monitoring body is dissolved.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that the clearance of goods at the Colombo Port has been crippled due to the ongoing trade union action.
