National Police Commission (NTC) has decided to temporarily withhold the promotions proposed by the IGP and appoint a three-member committee to look into the matter.
Secretary of the Commission, Ariyadasa Cooray told our news team that promotions will be processed after two months.
A list of recommendations compiled by the IGP with regard to promoting police officers, from the post of constables to police inspectors, was submitted to the NTC for approval.
The promotions have been based on a mechanism which considers the period of service.
However, due to the uncertainty of processing promotions based on the recommendations made by the NTC, a long term mechanism for implementing police promotions has become imperative.
Accordingly, the commission has decided to appoint a three-member committee to oversee a viable process.
The secretary of the NTC further noted that a final decision will be taken within the next two months, based on the report submitted by this committee.
