A pregnant woman who was shot in front of Welikada Prison last evening underwent a seven hour long surgery.
Director of the Colombo National Hospital Dr. Anil Jasinghe said she was transferred to the ICU following the surgery. He also said that the unborn baby was unharmed during the incident.
The victim was shot and wounded in front of the Welikada Prison, when she was returning after visiting an inmate yesterday evening.
Two individuals had come in a motorcycle and asked her if she was the spouse of an inmate known as ‘Samayan’. They had then shot her and fled the area.
The woman was rushed to the National Hospital in Colombo.
Meanwhile, the police said that the victim was not the wife of Samayan. Her husband was serving a term for minor offences.
A special police team has commenced investigations to arrest the shooters.
A senior police officer in charge of the investigation told our news team that they have found several leads to the case.
