President Maithripala Sirisena says it is the responsibility of the government and the general public to safeguard women in Sri Lanka.

Speaking at the Women’s Day national event held at H.M. Weerasinghe Sports Ground in Ampara he cited the important role women play in the society.

Women and Child Affairs Minister Chandrani Bandara, Minister Daya Gamage and Deputy Minister Anoma Gamage also took part in the event.

Meanwhile, a separate event organized by the SLFP Women’s Front was held under the patronage of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga at the party headquarters.

Joint Opposition members of the Women’s Front engaged in an appeal before deity at the Navagamuwa Paththini Devalaya. They called on Paththini (goddess) to create an environment for women to engage in activities without any intimidation.

Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa and several MPs including Pavithra Vanniyaarachchi participated at the event.
