The United Nations (UN) says it will look into the alleged abduction and torture of one of its staff members when he served in Sri Lanka.

Deputy Spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Farhan Haq made this statement during the daily media briefing in New York yesterday.

He said the UN has a duty to all staff members to ensure their basic rights are respected.

A journalist at the media briefing said a member of the UN Human Rights Commission had filed a complaint claiming he was abducted in a white van and tortured.

The journalist further said the UN employee is currently residing in Tamil Nadu.

In response Deputy Spokesman Farhan Haq said “If there’s a report of a staff member being tortured, we would have to take that up. We’ll need to follow up on what happened with this particular case.”
