Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera who was arrested for keeping an elephant calf illegally was remanded until the 17th of March.

The thero was remanded when he was produced before Colombo Additional Magistrate Nishantha Peris this afternoon.

A senior police officer told our news team that a team of policemen arrested the Thera at his residence - Allan Mathiniyaramaya.

Earlier the Attorney General’s Department informed Court that there is sufficient evidence to prove that the Thera did not have a licence to keep the elephant calf at his residence.

Later the Thera filed a fundamental rights petition requesting the Supreme Court to issue a decree preventing police from arresting him.

However speaking to the media Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera said that the elephant calf he cared for was abandoned at his residence temple.

He also commented that he should be arrested if his good deed is interpreted as a misdeed.

Meanwhile NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa questioned the government about the arrest of Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera in parliament today.

Leader of the House Lakshman Kiriella and Law and Order Minister Saagala Rathnayake also intervened in the argument.
