Two draft proposals for a 2,500 rupee salary increase and a 10,000-rupee minimum salary in the private sector are scheduled to be presented in the parliament today.
Minister of Labour and Trade Union Relations W. D. J. Seneviratne will be presenting the two proposals.
This will be the first time that the private sector employees’ minimum salary will be decided by a parliamentary Act.
These two drafts have been prepared as a result of a long-standing trade union demand that was made to the Government.
If the Act is passed, the private sector employees’ minimum salary will be Rs. 10,000, the minimum daily wage will be Rs.400.
The ministry of Labour and Trade Union Relations said that this would have come into effect from January this year, the arrears would also have to be paid.
